The zoo built a new interactive exhibit for kids, and we got to visit it for the first time this summer. You can pull yourself along a little pond on a raft, play in a giant treehouse and climb alongside spider monkeys, play in a giant nest, play in a waterfall, and play with sand and walk down a stream:
We were also there on member day, so we got to play in a bounce house:
We finished up the last things on our “Summer Fun List” the beginning of August, and one of those was balloon baseball:
This month Ivy started to hold our hands when we were feeding her a bottle, like she wanted to make sure you weren’t going to take the bottle away until she is done.
Beautiful Nebraska!
We celebrated our tenth anniversary this August by going to Rodizio Grill in Lincoln, looking around there, and hitting Dairy Queen afterwards:
Zane started asking “why?” to everything this month. He also became obsessed with Batman!
We did one of our traditional summer activities: breaking toys out of an ice block. The kids had a blast!
Another fun summer activity: sprinklers!
Ivy’s new favorite thing is to poop every time she gets in the car seat, even if she’s only in there for a few minutes.
Another summer fun list item: Wacky Wednesday! We dressed backwards for it:
We also drew portraits of each other with window markers:
When I put Ivy in bed, she automatically turns onto her tummy and curls her knees under her with her bum in the air.
Ice cream social the week before school started for the new kindergartners!
Hyrum’s new favorite game to play with his younger siblings is to chase them and say, “I’m the hug monster!” Then when he catches them, he gives them he gives them a big hug.
Summer fun: camping in the backyard with Daddy!
Ryan found a little garter snake in the backyard when he was mowing, and the kids loved seeing and holding it!
Daddy/daughter time:
Zane took this picture of me:
Zane’s new response when you ask him how something was: “awe-shum.”
Back to School night!
First day of school! They were both so excited and were so glad they got the teachers they wanted.
I only teared up a little when my big kindergartener went to school for the first full day!
Ivy has a very restrained sense of humor- she only thinks something is funny the first or second time, after that she won’t laugh at it anymore. She is also not easily amused, though she always has smiles for her mama!
Ryan and I had a fun date this month! We went to breakfast at a French bakery and then went to the Joslyn Art Museum where we saw a French jewelry collection.
Cora told me one Sunday after a Stake Conference, “today was a slow Sunday, not a Fast Sunday.”
This month we got to see a total eclipse of the sun! We drove to Grand Island, NE, about two hours away to try to see it for the longest time possible and to get away from all the clouds that were threatening our view. We had no definite plan, so we just ended up stopping at a park near the freeway to watch it, along with about one hundred other people. The park was actually nice, with a little lake connected to it, a playground, and a bathroom, so it fit our purposes perfectly!
We had a picnic lunch and the kids played on the playground while we watched the moon slowly cover the sun. Then we had full eclipse for two minutes or so, and it seemed like dusk all around us with a noticeable drop in temperature. It was actually a truly amazing experience, one that is hard to describe or see in pictures, but where you really just have to experience it for yourself. Someone proposed at the park we were at during the eclipse, and someone nearby blew off fireworks. It was all just amazing and I felt such a sense of community from the experience. After the full eclipse passed, everyone cheered because of the unique and amazing experience it was. Hyrum even started singing that it was the best day ever! The drive home was extremely traffic-y, as we expected but still worth it.
I wrote on Instagram of the experience: “Being in the car for seven hours, two baby diaper blowouts, and having allergic reactions to the grass around me were all completely worth it to see the total eclipse! It was soooooo cool!”
The eclipse made cool shadows on the ground:
Sometimes Cora sleeps really funny:
Cora started soccer this month for her very first time! She is definitely learning and getting better with each game!
Zane loves to dress up:
Ryan started another semester teaching again!
Ivy went in the bouncer for the first time this month! It took her a couple of times in it to start jumping, but now she loves it and jumps and jumps and jumps! Zane even likes to jump right next to her while she’s in it, and it makes her laugh
Hyrum started soccer again this month! He’s doing even better than last season- he’s running his hardest for a lot of the game and blocks a lot of kicks and goals on defense! (Sometimes Cora gets bored watching his games though).
Hyrum made a “heart map” in his writing notebook, which was a picture of his heart with all the things he loves written in there. He had Ninjago, all his teachers previous and current, Batman, Pokemon, Maddy, and the only family member that made it in there was Ivy, but she was right in the middle!
