Zane Matthew Schuetzler Is Born!

I had really hoped that the baby would be born early. I didn’t want his birthday so close to Thanksgiving, I wanted to be able to go to Mesa for Thanksgiving this year, and I wanted him to be a little older before Ryan had to travel for flyouts and his conference in New Zealand. However, Zane did not come early. I was starting to think he’d never come and that I’d have to be induced a week after my due date. Ryan and I had joked earlier in the pregnancy that since Hyrum was a week and a half late, and Cora was a week and a half early, that our third baby would be right on time to split the difference. Turns out, we were right! Zane was born on his due date, November 23rd, at 12:37 pm.

My water broke at 1 am on his due date (which when I woke up Ryan to tell him, he groaned because it was in the middle of the night AGAIN). So we called my friend Jenni, and she came over to sleep at our house with the older kids until my parents made it to Tucson. I got checked, and indeed my water had broken. Once in Labor and Delivery, they monitored me for awhile, then they gave me Pitocin to move things along (per my request). Not long after, I got my epidural. Then it was mostly sleeping until I was feeling the urge to push. By this point my epidural had worn off a little more than I would have liked, but the nurse told me by the time I got some more in my system, the baby would be born. So I held off. For the first time for me, I was able to move both feet and my right side was actually fully mobile. Also for the first time, I felt more of the pain of pushing something huge out of a smaller hole. I had never wanted something out of me so bad as when I started pushing and he hadn’t crowned yet! I pushed and out he came, kind of purple like Cora had been. I thought right away that he looked like Hyrum. 11 pounds, 7 ounces, and 20 inches long. So tiny!

Zane cried for his entire first hour of life- he hardly calmed down at all, even with skin to skin time. He didn’t want to nurse until a couple hours later. I was starting to think that Zane was going to be a very difficult, crying baby since nothing was working to stop his cries. Then, he got swaddled really well in a blanket for the first time. He stopped crying! Yay! It turns out he just really doesn’t like being naked and exposed. He still doesn’t!

Once we got that figured out, Zane has been a dream. He nurses really well, sleeps great (even through all the noise at our house), and is just generally happy, except when he’s naked or getting a diaper change. He did choke a few times at the hospital (scary), which the nurses told us is somewhat normal as the baby tries to get out all of the stuff from from his lungs. We actually got out of the hospital the day after he was born, which was a record for us! And really great because I do not like being in the hospital. My bed had never felt so comfy and cozy.

His first few days Ryan thought he looked like a tiny guru that you find at the top of the mountain, while I thought his pointed little face looked kind of mousy. He has since grown out of that Smile

He is very patient with his big brother and sister holding him, and he loves to look at them when he’s awake.
