On our way back to home to UT from Mesa, Arizona, me and the kids stopped for a couple days in Kanab, AZ.
Our first day we went to hike the Red Hollow slot canyon. It took us awhile to find the right path, but the kids enjoyed the walk in the wash. I did have to make the rule- for this and the rest of the hikes- that they could only go on one little side adventure until we made it to our destination. (On the way back, they could do as many side adventures as they wanted- though by that point they were usually too tired for side adventures.)
They all deemed this big rock, the "Lion King rock," and took turns being a lion on it:
The kids loved these little markers people had made, and Zane decided to make his own:We made it to the slot canyon! And it was so cool! I now understand the hype, even if parts of it made my claustrophobic self uncomfortable:
And, we discovered a big hill of white, soft sand almost all the way back to our car, and the kids LOVED it there. We stayed there for at least an hour while the kids just climbed and played in the sand:
Another Lion King moment:
We stopped in Orderville at a rock shop for the kids to look at, and they each got a little rock as a souvenir from the trip:
That afternoon we went to the Pink Coral Sand Dunes:
Again, the kids LOVED the sand (it really is so soft):
They loved burying each other, and then breaking free all at once:
Sand angel!
We climbed out to the top of a big dune, and the kids loved running down it over and over again:
The next morning we tried an animal sanctuary in the area, but since we didn't have reservations (they were all full by the time I decided to go to Kanab for Spring Break) they couldn't really see any animals, except for some horses from the road and a cat in the gift shop:
We saw this Disney Barn, apparently built by Disney and used in a film Jodie Foster was in:
Then we went to Zion National Park. That was a mistake. It was so crowded we couldn't find a parking spot anywhere, even at the lesser-known hiking spots we had heard about. I probably won't be back to Zion's, at least not for a LONG time. It was cool to drive through the tunnel though. There was a scenic overlook where we were able to park and get this picture:
I did eventually find a parking spot at the main station, but the only hike from there was the Pa'rus trail, which had no shade and it was getting hot. We went a tiny way down it, to this river access, stayed there for a couple minutes, then drove back to the hotel.
Later that evening, the day was redeemed by a hike to the Toadstool HooDoos near Kanab:
After a hike through some interesting rock formations, we made it to the Hoodoos!

The kids found this white sandy slope that they decided was a slide:
And we hiked back!
It was a fun little stop, and I'm glad we were able to have a few new adventures over Spring Break.
