April 2011

These past couple of months have gone by so fast, it’s hard to believe it’s May already!

Hyrum Month 18 001

Hyrum has really become a climber this month. It seems like every day I watch him climb on something new I hadn’t thought of being a problem before. In fact, on May 1st Hyrum climbed (jumped?) out of his crib for the first time. We aren’t sure how he did it, but we figured it wasn’t safe, so we’re planning on switching to the toddler bed soon. I knew this day was coming, I just hoped it wasn’t for a few more months at least! I worry once he’s in a toddler bed he’ll never take a nap again. We’ll see, I guess.

He’s learning tons of new words, and uses them more and more. Here’s how he says some things, phonetically:

  • wa-wa= water
  • outs= outside or inside
  • at= hat
  • ot= hot (he thinks anything that is even slightly warm is hot)
  • gack-gack= chocolate (learned this one at Easter time)
  • oh-eee= Oreo
  • ruh-rats= Rugrats and pretty much any TV ( we watch Rugrats on Netflix streaming during his treatment every day and he really likes it)
  • shihs= cheese
  • kaka= cracker
  • bahf= bath
  • off= both on and off
  • wok-wok= walk, meaning he wants to walk (he usually says this at the store when he wants me to get him out of the cart so he can run away from me as fast as he possibly can)
  • wok-ahk= blocks
  • bahts=button (he loves to push them)

He loves singing and doing the actions for “Once There Was a Snowman,” “The Wheels on the Bus,” and “Popcorn Popping.”

He has really become a pill at the store. I move him from the cart seat, to the back of the cart, to holding him, to letting him walk while holding his hand, to letting him “push” the cart, and he is still pretty much crying the whole time. If I force him to stay in one spot (like the cart seat) he flails and pushes himself to where he looks like he is going to fall out of the cart.  The problem is that what he really wants to do is run around, unrestrained. I’ve tried snacks, milk, letting him help, etc. and am about to just give up for awhile and go grocery shopping at night when Dad is home. Any ideas for me?

Hyrum Month 18 063

Hyrum has become a good helper! He likes to put things away and even remembers where things go. I’m loving it! I know it won’t last forever, so I’m just trying to enjoy it while it lasts :)

Hyrum Month 18 060

Hyrum goes to a different nursery class now! They tell me he’s good in there, which is a relief because he was pretty naughty in our nursery class. Here’s a picture of his first day:

  2. have you tried those monkey backpacks where the tail is a lease? at first i thought they were ridiculous, but they are kind of great at the same time. elijah really likes wearing one and at the airport it was a life saver - some freedom to run around but a little bit more safe and restrained.
