We had a fun 4th of July this year. The weekend before we went to Mesa and saw some old friends and hung out with family. We also did an early 4th celebration by going to my parent’s ward pool party and then going to the fireworks in downtown Mesa. As I worried would happen, Hyrum freaked out about them and was scared of the loud noises. Cora was unimpressed, and pretty much slept through all of them.
On the actual 4th of July we were back in Tucson and since it was such a cool day (for AZ- only got up to like 88 or 90!) we headed to the zoo.
This was probably Hyrum’s favorite time at the zoo yet- I keep hearing about it. He must be at a good age for the zoo.
Hyrum playing the drums at the new elephant exhibit:
We managed to almost make it to the car before the monsoon hit, so we had great timing. We went out to lunch and headed home where we changed out of our wet clothes.
That night we had a BBQ with patriotic watermelon stars and pound cake with red and blue berries. Then we drove down near the air force base to check out the fireworks from the car while we played some patriotic CD Ryan happened to have from his high school days. It was actually a really nice way to see the fireworks in AZ with young kids. We weren’t hot, because we stayed in the car, and we were far enough away that the loud noises didn’t freak Hyrum out. So, he loved the fireworks this time! He keeps asking me to see fireworks again at night, and I have to keep telling him it was only the one night. He even thinks any blinking lights outside when we drive at night are fireworks now. Silly kid.
My patriotic cuties:
Funny story: On the 4th when we were in the car watching fireworks I was telling Hyrum how I love America and that we are American and how cool our freedoms are and such. Apparently he understood more than I thought because the next day Hyrum was chasing me and I said “run, run, as fast as you can; can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!” Hyrum stopped and looked at me and said, “you not gingerbread, Mommy, you America!”
