Spring Break 2020 (AKA Quarantine Week 1)

This is an interesting time to be alive, for sure. Things I never foresaw are just happening right and left: a pandemic, church and schools closed for at least six weeks, everything just being shut down, cancelled, or postponed. Basically, we've been asked by the government to just stay home for at least a month to prevent the spread of Covid-19 (a respiratory, contagious, and possibly life-threatening illness).

The first week of quarantine, as it's being called, happened to coincide with the kids' Spring Break. Now, I had big plans to take the kids all over the city to use our numerous season passes at different venues. I love getting out and doing things and I especially love doing it with all my kids in tow. Obviously, those plans were not realized.

So, instead, I devised some fun at home, to try to give the kids a fun Spring Break still. Really, the kids have had no problem with just being home doing fun things. In fact, the one time I did make all of them go out and do things (in nature, six feet away from others), some of them complained heartily. So, it seems that so far I'm the only one having a hard time with being home all the time. Which is great!

Here's what we did for a fun Spring Break at home:

We had a video game day (the kids get to play video games/have a tablet all day- it is probably one of their favorite days of the year):

Ryan put together a huge puzzle with the kids:

We had Create Day. Hyrum and Cora did some coding to create games and little characters:

The kids all made some Micro Mosaics (from a craft kit I had bought last summer):

They created a city out of all our different building materials:

We created some drawings using Art Hub for Kids:

We had Nature Day (which the older two didn't really like). We went in our backyard and did a Spring Nature Scavenger Hunt and used a nature-themed fortune teller to do some activities:

The kids watched a nature documentary inside, and then later we went on a walk around Walnut Creek lake:

We had Movie Day, where the kids each got to pick a movie to watch, and they got to eat lots of popcorn and candy (again, another family favorite, though Hyrum refuses to watch what the little kids like):

We had Game Day, where each kid got to pick a board game to play and we all had to play it together. Hyrum picked Loot, Cora picked Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Zane picked Cat in the Hat I Can Do That (pictured below), and Ivy picked princess bingo:

On Saturday, the last day of Spring Break, we did chores, made chocolate chip cookies, watched a leftover movie from Movie Day, and then watched videos of amusement park rides and pretended we were on them:

This week has been challenging, but good. From now on, we will be doing homeschooling during the week, so our time will look a little bit different! Here's to hoping this is only a 6 week quarantine and no longer...
