Mid-June we went on a family trip to Nauvoo, St. Louis, and Kansas City. Our first stop was Nauvoo, where we started with some yummy Mexican food near our Airbnb:
Then we went to Historic Nauvoo to the fair they put on before the pageant. The kids played lots of little games, including bean bags:
They also watched a puppet show about a pioneer boy giving up his little wagon to help build the temple. The kids got their own sock puppets afterwards:
Then we watched the pageant, or tried to. After about the first 5-10 minutes they had to stop the show because of a storm. It was good they did cancel the show, because the storm turned out to be pretty intense. However, one of my favorite parts of the whole trip was watching the lightning strike across the Mississippi river as we drove back to the place we were staying.
The next morning me and the two older kids went to church, since Ryan and the two littles weren't feeling very good. We hit the Nauvoo buffet afterwards, and it was delicious!
Later that afternoon, when Ryan and the kids were feeling a little bit better, we went to a park nearby while we waited for our tour of Carthage Jail to be available. This ended up being Ivy's favorite part of the entire trip, and she still talks about going to the playground:
At this park Ryan also learned he can still do Underdog with the kids swinging:
At Carthage Jail we learned more about the place where Joseph and Hyrum Smith were martyred. It was pretty cool to see the bullet hole in the door still there. It struck me how prepared they were for this moment, after all they had been through and survived already.
Ivy is small, but somehow she can manage to sleep in a way that makes it hard for anyone else to share the King bed at our Airbnb:
Our place also had these large sculptures of children in the front and back yards which kind of freaked me out a couple of times when I only saw it out of the corner of my eye:
The next morning everyone was feeling a lot better so we visited Nauvoo. The Nauvoo temple is so beautiful and amazing:
We also saw the memorial to Joseph and Hyrum:

At the Nauvoo Visitor's Center, we went through the women's sculpture garden:
Then we ate a picnic lunch and went on an oxen ride (Cora was insistent we do that):
Then we went on the wagon ride, pulled by Clydesdales, and Zane fell asleep:
Then we looked around at all of the recreated building, including the Cultural Hall, where Hyrum played some Entertainer on the old piano:
We also got cookies from the bakery, learned about making shoes, saw Johnathon Browning's house, and Hyrum got to be an apprentice at the Blacksmith:
The kids got "prairie diamonds" there too!
We saw Brigham Young's house:
And we learned about the tin making at the Tinsmith:
The kids even went to a little school where they wrote on their slate boards:
We had a fun and informational time in Nauvoo, and I'm glad I got to see some real places where my ancestors lived and worked!
